Personal Style & Reflection:
Your Story In Every Detail
Your modern kitchen is more than a backdrop. A modern kitchen should be the heart of the home and reflect your personality, your lifestyle.
Picture it – the morning light spills through the windows over the farmhouse sink across to the milky white marble island and beyond where it reflects off the brass polished hardware on the perfectly tailored range hood. The kitchen feels less like a moment in time and more like a timeless space. While kitchens should be functional, they should be filled with soul and curated expressions of our everyday lives that blend livability and innovation in ways we’ve never seen before.
At Twilly & Fig, we believe that a well-designed kitchen should evoke a sense of balance, beauty, and ease. Our latest project in the Old Town neighborhood of McKinney, Texas is a perfect example of how this balance is achieved without sacrificing function. Set in a charming 1900’s Victorian home, this historic gem of a kitchen required thoughtful and intentional design that honored the original roots of the home while creating a space that is perfectly tailored to modern life.
Charming and Curated
By removing a full bathroom between the kitchen and dining room, the additional 93 square feet opened space for floor-to-ceiling cabinets and a large-scale island that is multifunctional for cooking, serving, and entertaining.
From the beginning, it was essential that the kitchen capture the tone of the wrap-around porch sets as you come up the walk.
With a jewel-toned color palette, classical gold metal and rich stain finishes, unique hardware and library ladder mixed with impactful, purposeful layers of light, all these elements create balance between the generous proportions of a historical Victorian while keeping to its understated modern grandeur.
One of our favorite elements of this renovation design is the bespoke beverage center crowned by stained glass windows that bathe the room in a colorful glow. It’s a whimsical, yet functional corner where tradition and creativity coexist, creating an atmosphere that truly evokes the essence of the home and the family.
Tailored Color Stories – Soft to deep saturated hues are taking the center stage. While the white kitchen remains timeless, we are seeing a shift toward warm, grounded colors in deep taupe, muted sages, and velvety rich tones and anything blue. These shades add depth without overpowering, creating an atmosphere that is both upscale and welcoming. Stains – whether dark or light – are making a comeback, and a truly custom kitchen can intermix all three color elements.
Statement Lighting
Statement Lighting – Lighting in a modern kitchen is more than functional, it is an art form. In our recent Old Town McKinney Victorian Restoration project, we incorporated hand-forged pendant lighting that brings in an elevated, sculptural touch to the space.
Layers of lighting, from task sconce lighting flanking the range and sink, to ambient and accent lighting on the open shelving and above the bar sink, allow homeowners to effortlessly change the mode from the hustle and bustle of evening dinner prep to a lively gathering to a more intimate evening.
We never overlook the powder of natural lighting, and this kitchen was no exception. To maximize natural light, we strategically placed windows framing the range, above the sink and by the beverage center to allow light to flood the area from morning to evening.

Stay Organized
Innovative Storage Solutions – The art of hidden functionality is having a major moment and is not going anywhere. Whether it is a custom coffee station tucked behind retractable panels, multi-layered drawer systems, or thoughtfully zoned workspaces, these additions make even the busiest kitchens feel effortlessly organized and serene. Creative solutions are essential in making a home tailored to how your family lives and how the space needs to be utilized.
Creative storage solutions do not mean aesthetics need to be sacrificed. While we had a small space for this multi-purpose beverage center, we were able to bring in a variety of specialty storage solutions to meet the needed function of the area.
By painting the cabinets in Benjamin Moore Jack Pine and pairing it with a stunning glass mosaic, creating a beautiful spot to make your morning cup of joe, grab a juice box for the little one or pour a night cap.

Natural Materials, Honed to Perfection
Clients are craving the authenticity of natural materials, but with finishes that enhance durability. Oak cabinetry mixed with unlacquered brass fixtures ages gracefully over time, adding character and warmth to a space.
While we love the look of marble, the care and durability concerns that come along with it are not always the right choice for a family. In working with a man-made material like Quartz, you do not have to sacrifice the beautiful look of stone to get the durability needed for a modern kitchen.
We partnered with Cambria for our stunning quartz countertop in both our Modern Art Deco Revival Project and Old Town McKinney Victorian Restoration interior design projects.
Whimsical Touches that Spark Joy
Function kitchens don’t have to be all serious! From colorful bespoke tile backsplashes to hand-painted ceiling details, the best kitchens today celebrate the personality of those in the home – those unexpected moments that make a space feel uniquely yours.
The use of these custom handmade tiles from Pratt & Larson added the right whimsical touch to this Victorian kitchen. We were able to custom select the colors in the tile to blend with the blue range and the veining in the Cambria Portrush countertops. The brass fixtures from the range and lighting to the plumbing fixtures and hardware add the perfect pop of warmth.
To add more storage and create a moment for display, we designed a custom cabinet below the staircase. The Cremona bolts add the perfect amount of Victorian flair.
Whether you are dreaming of a full-scale luxury kitchen remodel or gathering ideas for your own creative transformation, Twilly & Fig is here to bring your vision to life. As a premier Dallas interior designer, we specialize in creating homes that feel curated and unmistakably you.
