7 Dining Room Interior Design Ideas & Interior Design Trends 2024
Turn Traditional Furnishings Into A Modern Art Deco Dream Room
For many people, sitting down for a nice meal can be the highlight of a busy day. That’s not always the case when your dining space is dark, drab, and uninspiring. That was the case with Twilly & Fig clients Louise and Frank.
Here is the before photo of their dining room, prior to its Art Deco transformation.
The Dark Drabby Dining Room Set
Louise knew she’d be spending more time at home and wanted her dining room ready for entertaining. She and Frank trusted our team to deliver fresh, welcoming updates with a touch of modern Art Deco flair.
7 Modern Dining Room Decor Ideas
1. Mix old dining room furniture with modern Art Deco accents
We kept heirlooms like the dining table, grandfather clock, chandelier, and artwork. We added light-colored upholstered chairs to balance the darker tones and bring in freshness.
2. Add colorful, modern art
A large warm-toned framed artwork became our anchor. Soft cool tones throughout the room and gold accents tied everything together visually with the chandelier.
3. Use circular mirrors with modern brushed brass
To update the traditional feel of the rectangular mirror, we added round gold mirrors, which expanded the space and gave it a contemporary vibe.
4. Use lighter colors and metallic wallpaper
The ivory wall color stayed, but we incorporated cream tones into chairs and window treatments. We added metallic Art Deco wallpaper behind the buffet for contrast and elegance.
5. Incorporate a modern buffet with clean lines
The Capiz shell buffet added elegance with its straight lines, antique gold legs, and deep finish—balancing traditional elements with contemporary style.
6. Mix vintage and modern dinnerware
We styled the table with the client’s cream and gold vintage plates, added polka dot napkins, striped flutes, and Art Deco glass bowls for a chic and ready-for-guests setting.
7. Get creative with your centerpiece
Instead of flowers, we used metal floral sculptures that also serve as candle holders. The key: centerpieces should never block conversation across the table.
Bonus: Tie in adjacent rooms with color
We used a soft blue and sage green palette for the adjoining family room to create a cohesive flow with the dining room’s artwork and accessories.
