A Family-Friendly Kitchen & Mudroom Remodel

When you walk into the Sage Brush Family /home today, it’s hard to imagine the dark, compartmentalized layout that once defined it. Built in the 1980s, the original floor plan left the kitchen remodel, nook, and family room not only closed off, but lacking in natural light. For this family, that simply wouldn’t do.

With three young children and the everyday rhythm of school, sports, and family meals, the family knew their home needed more than just repairs after water damage, needed total reimagining. The vision was a bright, open, and connected space where family life could flow with ease.

Creating an Open-Concept Kitchen Remodel

The homeowners wanted a space that not only felt lighter, but also more livable. By removing walls between the kitchen and family room, we created the kind of open concept layout that makes modern family life so much smoother. With three young kids, it was more important to take the original dining room space and turn it into a playroom off the kitchen. This allows for kid toys to stay confined to one area yet provide proximity to the family when the parents are in the kitchen or family room.

Not only was it important to create a more open, larger living and cooking space, but the family wanted to maximize natural light where possible. With new windows over the sink and a large slider off the family room leading to the patio, natural light streams through and across, completely transforming the atmosphere.

High Functionality at Every Turn

For a family that cooks every day, having the perfect balance of workspace and storage is crucial. Whether they are cooking up a weekend brunch, baking and frosting a birthday cake or preparing a weeknight dinner, the large island allows for maximum prep space with easy access to the cooktop, sink, double ovens, and fridge.

Having easy access to cooking bowls and dishes, gadgets, utensils and ingredients is an important part of the planning process in pulling together any kitchen. Where possible, we would like to be able to have highly used items in the zones where they will be mostly used. We give all our clients homework at the beginning of every kitchen project to learn more about what they use, how often they use it, and where ideally, they’d like it to be housed in the kitchen.

In this kitchen, we added built-in storage for spices beside the range for when they are cooking for easy access while keeping the counters decluttered. To the left and right of the cooktop are pull-outs on either side for gadgets and oils and anything else that you use for specialty cooking. Below the cooktop are deep drawers for pots and pans for organized storage and easy access. To the left of the cooktop is an appliance garage for the family’s air fryer and crock pot that can be used within the cabinet with dedicated electricity.

In the island we added the bench seat for the table —a centerpiece that doubles as the family’s homework perch, snack station, and gathering spot. On this family’s checklist, there were highly specialized items such as a candy thermometer, showing us how important it was to have a spot for every item. We did not want to miss any opportunity to maximize storage, so we used either side of the island for additional drawers for linens and small baking cookware at her fingertips while preparing for baking.

Setting the Tone

While the homeowners wanted a brighter, airier kitchen, they also wanted to be able to bring in pops of color. Since we were able to increase the amount of natural light streaming into the room, we were able to pair the lighter elements of the space with bold, saturated accent colors throughout.

While we painted the perimeter cabinets white to help keep the space feeling open and bright, the island is coated in a jewel-tone blue for a playful contrast. The backsplash is especially memorable: a green-and-white marble mosaic behind the range framed by beveled white tile. It brings texture, pattern, and a dose of personality into the cooking space, while tying into the jewel tones across the home.

For an extra touch of character, the drink bar shines in a deep green-blue hue, paired with a playful green glass mosaic backsplash, creating a moody corner in this bright and airy kitchen.

Elevating the Details

Design lives in the details, and this project was no exception. Lighting from Savoy House and Hudson Valley creates warmth and focus throughout. The Delta faucet and Kohler sink add everyday function, while Amerock hardware gives a timeless polish. Every selection was made to balance sophistication with family-friendly kitchen design practicality.

The quartz countertops balance durability with beauty, with the topped in MSI Calacatta Lapiza and the perimeter in Calacatta Bulgary. Together, they create a surface that’s as functional for a family breakfast as it is elegant for evening entertainment.

A Drink Bar for All Occasions

The beverage center has become such a larger part of the main living areas in modern day homes, and we knew having an all-encompassing one in this home was essential. Whether it is for dad’s morning cup of coffee, prepping smoothies for the kids or a night cap for mom and dad after the kids are asleep, this drink bar does it all. Of course, we thought about the children in the house and ensured the liquor pullout had a special lock to keep little hands out.

Designing a Family Mudroom Remodel

One of the smartest updates in this home was adding a true mudroom remodel. With kids in tow, backpacks, shoes, and sports gear all need a home. The original laundry room simply couldn’t carry that load. With the reconfiguration of the main living areas including the kitchen, we were able to open those spaces enough to take space from the previous kitchen nook and create an official mudroom. The space is now accessible by the garage and the back patio, creating the perfect catch-all spot before heading into the rest of the home.

Here, custom cabinetry provides lockers and cubbies, hooks for coats, and concealed charging for devices. The durable flooring is slip-resistant and easy to clean—ideal for the comings and goings of an active household. As part of the design, we also incorporated a desk spot for the home command center. This space has quickly become the family’s drop zone design, a practical yet stylish spot for daily life.

A Home that Works for Family Life

For the Smiths, this wasn’t just about renovating a house – it was about curating a home that fits the way they truly live. By blending an open-concept kitchen remodel with a tailored mudroom remodel, we created a space that’s as elevated as it is functional. The result is a home that welcomes natural light, invites connection, and gives a young family the tailored solutions they need to thrive. It’s proof that with thoughtful design, a house can evolve to meet the soul and rhythm of family life—beautiful, livable, and distinctly theirs.
