Color Washed and Comfort & -Curated
Here at Twilly & Fig we believe that bedrooms should be more than a place to rest; they should restore our body and mind. A true reflection of your style, they should support your pace, soothe your senses, and elevateyourexperience from the moment you walk in. I know that I love walking into my bedroom after I get home from a long day at work. To be honest, I love walking into my bedroom every minute of the day.
What I love in this primary bedroom from our Carnegie Estates Traditional project is how sunlight filters through linen draperies, spilling over the edge of a cloud-soft duvet.Lightncontrol and privacy are in the homeowner’s hands with these Hunter Douglas Duette shades. A velvet headboard and rich toned woods anchor the space, while brass and warm silver accents cast a gentle, warm glow. A modern blue wallpaper accent wall adds a playful masculine touch to the room contrasted by the feminine finishes of the nightstand. mirrors and lighting. This isn’t just a bedroom it’s a retreat. A deeply personal havenwhere design meets daily rituals, and where every detail whispers comfort, elegance, and intention.
Today’s blog post is to walk you through how to create a bedroom that doesn’t just look beautiful — it feels beautiful.
Start with the Soul of the Space : The Bed
The foundation of every dream bedroom begins with, you guessed it — the bed. We’re not talking just any old bed, but one that invites you in with layers of thoughtfully selected linens, a quality mattress, and textures that speak to both comfort and style. I love the style of this bed in our Frisco Lakeshore Retreat project, and how it works within the room with its plum plush tufted headboard against the tone-on-tone wallpaper. From a fabric headboard to a canopy bed, there are so many to select from today to bring a unique feel to your space.
Let’s talk sheets.
There is no better feeling than climbing into bed at the end of a long day to crisp, cool sheets. Sinking in below the perfect level of layering of blankets and quilts, there’s no better spot for a good night’s sleep. There are so many sheet options out there for us, but how do we select what works for us?
While thread count matters with sheets, it may just not be in the way you think. A higher thread count doesn’t always mean higher quality. What really matters is the weave of the fabric. Percale sheets are cool, crisp, and perfect for warm sleepers. Sateen, on the other hand, is soft, silky, and a touch warmer which is ideal for adding a hint of luxury. There are bamboo, cotton, and linen sheets out there as well for you to select from.
When it comes to the look of the sheets, this is where you can really bring in some extra detail for a more curated feel. Whether you bring in solid, prints, neutral, colors or a mix, have fun with it! On the bed below in one of our recent (yet to be shared!) projects, we opted for a more traditional, simple yet beautiful embroidered edge.
We always recommend washing your sheets weekly in warm water and drying them on low heat (or better yet, line-drying when the weather allows). Skip the dryer sheets and opt for dryer balls — they’re better for your fabrics, reduce static, and help preserve those dreamy textures you originally fell in love with. While the above advice should be taken to heart, always check with the washing instructions for your sheets to ensure the proper method and conditions for cleaning.
In a recent Dallas project, we layered a high-quality percale sheet set with pillowcases detailed with a ruffled edge, beneath a plush sateen coverlet. The blend of breathability of the cotton duvet with the blue-gray floral print gave a perfect fold at the end of the bed. The bed is perfectly topped off with a lumbar accent pillow with the Greek key design.
Lighting in a home has really become a piece of artwork in our homes. While inthe past the main areas got the beautiful lighting treatment where everyone
would gather, this detail has crept into the bedroom and has become an important part of the design and feel.
Lighting isn’t only functional in a bedroom, it’s atmospheric. Lighting should be thought of in layers –
• Ambient light – a beautiful overhead fixture and/or recessed lighting (on dimmers, always!)
• Task lighting – bedside sconces or lamps (or both!)
• Accent light from candles, picture lights, or even LED strips tucked behind architectural details.
The lighting should be able to flex between energizing morning prep and cozy nighttime wind-down, creating a perfectly honed rhythm for daily living.
Color has the power to ground or uplift, calm or invigorate. Deciding on what palette is utilized in a bedroom is a highly personal one.
Drawing inspiration from Architectural Digest and House & Garden, we’ve seen a resurgence in color-drenched walls and monochromatic layering. Imagine painting a bedroom suite in a deep yet soft green with added tone-on-tone textiles and brass accents. The result can be immersive yet serene.
In this first primary suite from Chapel Creek Modern Classicism, the design leant itself to a more neutral palette. With warm silver metals, soft luxurious textiles, the neutral palette is brought to life through the varying tones and textures used throughout the room
For this retreat in our Stonehill Ranch Oasis home, we lean into a palette that evokes peace and is filled with colors our client loved: dusty sages, stormy blues, and soft blushes, all balanced by warm neutrals. Bold pops of these colors are brought in through the details of the upholstered chairs, vibrant area rug and the ceiling. The warm neutrals keep the same feeling serene from the headboard and bedding to the pearlized wallpaper and warm silver
finishes.
Storage with Intention
An uncluttered space is a restful space. What this doesn’t mean is a sterile space withoutpersonality; it means approaching the space with intention. Hidden drawers in nightstands, custom wardrobes with dedicated compartments, and soft baskets for seasonal items all create visual and emotional calm without sacrificing beautiful, interesting elements and textures.
In our Historic Dallas Traditional home, we transformed a once-crowded bedroom into an oasis by integrating custom cabinetry in a silver leaf finish with drawers behind the raised panel doors. Every item not only found a home, but the space immediately felt twice as big. With the serene colors in a soft neutral, plum and navy blue, this bedroom is the escape that this couple wanted.
Refined Layers of Personal Style
Down to its core, what is it that gives a bedroom its soul? At Twilly & Fig, we believe that’s you! Whether it’s a curated stack of books, a framed love note, or a vintage ceramic dish that holds your rings, these are the items that turns a space into something personal.
In our Carnegie Estates project, we knew our client loved to ride his bike. Upon looking for pieces for his primary bedroom, we came across this artwork that a perfect addition to the space. On top of the chest, we added these horns from his own personal collection, enhancing the personality of the space.
Design Touches That Make a Difference
Adding layers of texture, patterns, materials, and colors are all the elements that go into creating that balanced, serene bedroom escape. The details matter, and these are some of the additional designs we incorporate with intent towards function and beauty.
✔ Statement Headboards: Artwork for your bed — tactile, bold, and endlessly
expressive.
✔ Mirrors: Reflect natural light throughout and expand the space to make it feel
larger.
✔ Plants: A little greenery adds warmth, texture, and vitality. Don’t forget there are
many health benefits for cleaner air as well, creating the perfect environment for
rest.
✔ Blackout Shades and Draperies: Elevate your sleep by blocking out any
unwanted light while adding a luxurious hotel vibe to the space.
✔ Area Rugs: Help to define the space and add comfort as one steps out of bed in
the morning.

Final Flourishes: The Luxury of Quiet
While all the above make for a perfect bedroom, getting a good night’ sleep is the top priority in creating the right environment. Doing so is a very personal journey.
Do you need to ensure there is no sound from outside getting in the room? Consider
soundproofing elements like upholstered walls, heavier drapery, or even strategic room dividers.
Do you need the room at a certain temperature to sleep soundly? A smart climate control and quality ventilation should be at the forefront of the design plan.
Does light bother you while sleeping or do you work hours that require you to sleep during
the day? Blackout shades and traversing treatments may be the solution to creating the light control you need for a restful sleep. Adding automation to these treatments gives you all the control you need at your fingertips.
Closing Thought:
Your bedroom should feel like it was designed just for you, because it was. At Twilly & Fig, we believe in creating spaces that aren’t just beautiful to look at, but nurturing to live in. Whether you gravitate toward the crisp charm of percale, the cozy indulgence of sateen, or a mix of both — the secret to a great bedroom lies in the layers: of texture, color, lighting, storage, and soul.
We’d love to know — what makes your bedroom feel like a sanctuary?
